Help Wanted – Must be Available 24/7…

Published by David at 4:51 pm under Opinion

Are you working harder?

Remember way back when – when you were not tethered to work/school/extracurricular activities? I’m talking about the pre-cell phone era. Ok, so if you are a 20-something, maybe you don’t quite remember that time. And now I’m feeling very, very old.

How about when we didn’t have access to our email 24-7? While it is great that we are all accessible for that elusive, mysterious and all-encompassing question that the office just has to ask you at that given moment…like where is the extra box of Avery 5160 labels?… is it really necessary?

How did we cope? What did we do when we couldn’t call our spouse/significant other/roommate and ask that he/she pick up a gallon of milk on the way home? And what did we do when we could not call in to work from the gas station to let the office know that your gas tank door is frozen shut due to last night’s ice storm and, as a result, you’re running a few minutes behind?

Just because you CAN work 24-7 from just about anywhere, does that mean you should? Where do you draw the line?

What do you think?

Just my personal opinion here but no, just because we can work 24/7 does not by any stretch indicate we should. In my experience working 24/7 leads to burnout. There are times when sacrificing balance in your life is necessary but those shouldn’t be 24/7/365. With that said wish me luck as I resist the urge to join the Crackberry ranks.

Like Meilee, just my personal opinion but I don’t believe that just because we can do 24/7, that we should do it. Taking a break from the every day grind is what rejuvenates us enough to get back into the office the next day. And I don’t know about the rest of you, but with work, school and a family it gets harder and harder to find time for just you…which is extremely important. My question would be, how do you handle the boss who knows that you have access 24/7 and wants you to be available at all times because he/she is?
